During 1998-2006, more than 94% of hemp plants eradicated under the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Domestic Cannabis Eradication / Suppression Program were classified as “ditch weed”, according to a Congressional Research Service report. In 2005 alone, this percentage represented over 218 million documented cannabis plants that were not used as a potential source of alternative fuel. Ditch weed contains low to none of the THC properties found in pharmaceutical-grade hemp, a.k.a. marijuana.

Farmers claim that hemp grows to its full maturity in 3 to 4 months (sometimes 2 to 3 months) and can harvest two crops per year on the same parcel of land, year after year. On a single acre of land, researchers at the University of Florida were able to yield over 11 tons of organic matter from Sunn Hemp.  Also, unlike ethanol derived from corn, soy, and sugar cane, industrial hemp does not compete with other food-based products.
